Battles continue between Antony, Octavian and the consuls, Hirtius and Pansa. By the end of the episode, two of the four are dead. Decimus escapes from Mutina and is awarded a triumph back in Rome. HE’S ONE OF THE CAESAR’S ASSASSINS! Antony gets reinforcements. And Cicero makes his last fatal mistake by saying of Octavian: “laudanum aduluscentum, ornandum, tollendum.”

Episode 9, Cicero’s fatal mistake: You’ve probably had emails about this, but Cicero’s phrase laudandum aduluscentum, ornandum, tollendum is a pun. Tollere has several meanings, raise up, lift up or destroy. So saying the ‘young man ought to be praised (its called the gerundive of obligation), decorated and…’ its up to you to work out whether he should be raised or lifted up, or destroyed!
Good joke, eh? Or a case of not being able to keep your fucking mouth shut when faced with this dilemma: should I a) make a great pun that will go down in history and be searchable in 2 millennia’s time or b) shut the fuck up because this mofo will take me down sooner than you can say boiled asparagus. Great show, got to it late and have just caught up! keep it up!
Yeah all of our sources said something similar. Cicero is a lesson in not being a smartass.
