Augustus brought better roads, wine and a taste for the nicer things in life to the Gauls. He also brought other aspects of Roman culture, like their religions, their amphitheatres, and he banned human sacrifices. But one of his appointees took advantage of the new Roman calendar. For that, he is the first recipient of our #DBAC award, introduced in our new section, “Uncle Cameron’s Corner”.

The preachy, judgemental , I’m better than you are crap from cameron is just becoming annoying. I’ve listened to your podcasts for a few years now and have enjoyed the history and laughs. I am now done. No one wants to either hang out with or listen to an arrogant cunt for to long. You have become the guy in the bar that at some point you look at and just say “shut the fuck up cunt”.
At which point I’d say “Hey it’s MY fucking bar. Where do you get off coming into MY bar and complaining about what I talk about? So don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
Whenever you mention Stalin, my bullshit sensor goes crazy. You seem to make excuses for him, like attributing the noble cause of national defense for the starvation of millions of Ukrainians or the elimination of Kulaks. You can’t know what he was thinking, you can only go by what he said and what he did. And although I may well be mistaken, I’m pretty sure his death count was much higher than 2 million, which is the higher figure for Gulag system deaths alone. Say what you like, it’s your show, but it’s disgusting to hear excuses for murder.
Carlos, I don’t know if you listen to our Cold War show, but if you do, you’ll find that we try to provide as much balance as possible regarding Stalin. Providing context, trying to figure out his rationale, isn’t the same as making excuses. We try to avoid simplistic characterisations of good and evil.
