On our Renaissance Times podcast this week we tell the story of the Fall of Constantinople. Legend has it that as the Ottoman army was laying siege to the city, an angel turned the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos (I saw this statue of him in Athens last year), into marble, so he could survive and return one day to liberate the city. Beats me why the angel didn’t just help him win the battle, but hey, what do I know about angels? Constantine’s top general allegedly said he would rather have Muslim Turks rule over the city than the Pope and his Catholics. That’s how much they hated the Catholics. ...
